Meanwhile Alice and Masautso, a black cowhand on her father’s estate on Zomba Mountain, fall in love and yearn for a socially impossible marriage. Unable to resist the sexual attraction they have for each other, continue to make love, though they know they shouldn’t. They are discovered when her mother discovers her daughter astride her lover in the noisy throes of explosive climax. Shocked, she runs to fetch her husband, who, stumbling out of bed, grabs a bullwhip and runs to his daughter’s room where he finds the lover disappearing through the window. He grabs his daughter, throws her on the floor and raises his arm to whip her, but her mother grabs his arm, deflecting it so he hits her instead, cutting her face and plucking out an eye. Horrified, he is struck down by a stroke and suffers a concussion when his head hits the bed. Both lovers, assuming that the other will blame them for the tragedy, avoid all contact until thanks to a flood they discover their mistake.
