In “Xanadu,” Rejoice, who is part of a large Malawian family on a tea plantation in Thyolo, is seduced by David, the dissolute owner of the plantation on which she works as his personal assistant, into a life of exotic sex, drugs, and dreams of achieving luxury and power as his wife or mistress. Her family is appalled. Her fiancé, Khotso is furious and angrily rejects her. David’s friends are strongly negative, and his family would be if they knew about it, but Rejoice remains steadfast in the course she has set herself. Rejoice is devastated by a visit from David’s sister who shows her how little chance there is of her dream coming true and she retreats to her family, who treat her with love, and Khotso, who still loves her is willing to take her back.
