In “For Love of a Horse,” Peggy, whose fiancé was killed days before their wedding, travels from Ireland to Thyolo, where she was born, to look after the orphaned child on an estate next to the one she used to live in, where she hopes to get over her loss. To do so, though, she has to leave behind her beloved horse. The child’s mother was killed in a particularly horrible way, and her husband, Andrew, is traumatized, becoming a recluse and taking against the horse his wife was riding when she was killed, and his son, who closely resembles her. Finding a horse in the estate’s stables who is being severely mistreated, she is horrified and defies Andrew’s orders. He is horrified when he discovers what she’s done and starts to send her packing, but Peggy, who understands from her own experience how grief can change one’s behavior, has been able to bring him out of his madness enough that he is reconciled with her and the horse, finding a new love for both.
