Meanwhile, on Likhubula Estate, Andy’s home, Chimwemwe and Dalitso, tea pickers, meet, fall in love, and set up housekeeping together. With Dalitso’s help, Chimwemwe is promoted to floor manager in the factory, and Dalitso becomes David’s wife, Sue’s maid. Unfortunately, Chimwemwe, who had been away to boarding school and was developing firm ideas about how whites should treat Malawians, takes strong exception to the suggestion by his white boss, Henderson, that he lend Dalitso out for a spot of interracial slap and tickle to earn a promotion. He refuses indignantly, earning Henderson’s enmity. Tiring of being harassed, Chimwemwe and Dalitso persuade another tea picker who was pregnant with Henderson’s child to blackmail him, with the threat of going to his wife as a way of getting justice, revenge, and protection.
