In “The Discovery,” Bertha, a Canadian, has given up all hope of marriage or even sexual fulfillment because she is fat. Travel is one of the activities she consoles herself with, and when she goes on safari in Zambia. One of the members of the safari group, Senzo, is a wealthy and recently widowed Zambian businessman who, like many African men, is turned on by fat women. He and Bertha are the only singles in the group, which throws them together, and they find many similar tastes and feelings despite their very different cultures. A strong friendship develops, and when Senzo discovers that Bertha thinks she is ugly because she is fat, he is moved to change her mind by admitting and then showing that he, at least, does not agree. After a week of passion-filled nights, they consider getting married, but agree that Bertha should return to Canada to make up her mind.
