Gentle Daily Practice for Seniors to Improve Balance and Prevent FallsBy Laura ChenLength4h 51m
About this audiobook
Think about the last time you hesitated before a step. A wet pavement, a dim hallway, a kerb that looked a little higher than you remembered.
That hesitation is information.
Balance is not a talent you either have or lack. It is a skill your body rehearses every time you shift weight, turn, or catch yourself. When that rehearsal gets less practice, because of caution or illness or stiff shoes or simply fewer walks, ordinary steps start to feel less trustworthy.
This workbook is built around that idea and nothing more ambitious than that.
Balance is a team effort inside the body. The eyes report where the horizon is. Sensors in the inner ears notice tilt and turn. Sensors in the feet, ankles and joints report pressure and position. The brain blends those messages and asks small muscles around the ankles, hips and trunk to make constant micro-adjustments. You do not notice most of them when the system feels fresh. You notice them when it feels unsure.
Tai chi slows those adjustments down until you can feel them happening. Rather than asking anyone to hop, jump or move at class pace, it asks for weight shifted deliberately, stances held briefly, and turns made slowly enough that the body has time to answer.
Inside: a fall-aware setup chapter that covers the room before it covers the movement, five foundational stances taught one at a time with illustrated figures, a twenty-one-day sequence of ten-minute sessions, a chapter on what to do after day twenty-one, and a chapter for the days when practice feels hard and the honest answer is to do less rather than skip it.
Every figure is described in plain language, with a note on what you should feel and what you should not. Chair-supported versions are given throughout, not tucked away at the back as an afterthought. Traditional vocabulary is used where it is useful and explained where it is not obvious, without being turned into a medical claim.
What this book does not do is promise to cure anything, replace medical advice, or substitute for a clinician who knows your history. It says so in the disclaimer and it keeps saying so in the chapters.
Written for older adults who want the plain version: ten minutes, a chair nearby, and a practice that gets more honest the slower it goes.
