Steam rose from the kettle in a quiet, steady ribbon, softening the edges of the small room before anything else could. It smelled faintly of jasmine and something toasted, like rice left just a moment longer on the heat. Mei paused in the doorway, one hand still on the frame, letting the scent reach her before she stepped inside.
The tea house was narrower than she had imagined, but deeper. Shelves lined one wall, each holding teacups that didn’t quite match—some thin and white, others painted with uneven flowers, one chipped at the rim and turned just slightly so the flaw faced inward. Light slipped in through a high window, warm and angled, catching on the steam and turning it gold.
She set her bag down on a low bench near the entrance. The wood creaked in a way that felt practiced, not fragile. Her fingers brushed the bench once, as if to confirm it would hold, then she sat. Just for a moment. Just to feel the room settle around her.
