About this audiobook
The Night Train Carriage
The carriage holds a low amber light, set in small shades above each seat, where the fabric has worn smooth with years of quiet travel, and the window beside it reflects that glow in a soft, doubled line. The glass is cool, and beyond it the dark countryside slides by in long, unbroken bands, a faint blur of hedgerow and field. It is late, the hour when stations have thinned and the day has folded into itself, and the train has found its steady rhythm. The light does not change. The seat does not shift. The world outside passes without asking to be known.
Far down the carriage, a kettle rests in a small metal alcove, its warmth held within, a low breath of heat that lingers even after it has been poured. The faint scent of tea leaves rests in the air, soft and dry, and the hum beneath the floor carries on without rise or fall.
