The Teacups at Dusk
Steam curled from the kettle in a thin, steady line, carrying the soft scent of jasmine across the small room. Mei stood just inside the doorway, one hand still on the wooden frame, letting the warmth meet her before she stepped fully in. The floorboards held a faint creak under her weight, not sharp, just enough to say someone had walked here many times before.
Shelves lined the walls, each one filled with mismatched teacups. Some thin as petals, others thick and steady. A few had hairline cracks that had been mended with care. The light through the front window was late afternoon gold, catching on the glaze of a pale blue cup near the counter.
She set her bag down on a low stool, the fabric brushing against the worn seat. The room smelled faintly of dried leaves and something sweet she couldn't quite place. Honey, maybe. Or memory.
