The Quiet Walk Home
Soft moss lay under Fern’s small paws, cool and gentle in the fading light. The air held a quiet warmth from the day, and the first evening breeze moved slowly through the leaves above her. Not far away, a cricket had begun its steady song, soft and even, as though it had all the time in the world.
Fern stood at the edge of the meadow, her ears relaxed, her body calm. The sky above her had turned a soft shade of blue-gray, and one small star had already appeared. She watched it for a moment, breathing in the calm of the evening.
There were two friends she wanted to visit before going home. Just two. She thought she might say goodnight, and then return to her burrow, where her nest waited, warm and familiar.
A slow breath moved through her chest. Perhaps she would begin with the little hollow under the oak tree. That was where Wren liked to rest at night.
With a gentle step forward, Fern began her quiet walk.
