Why Does Ice Float?
Cold water slid over Lila’s fingers as she chased a runaway ice cube around the kitchen sink. It bumped against the metal side with a soft clink, then spun away, always staying on top, never sinking no matter how hard she tried to press it down.
A thin beam of morning light stretched across the counter, turning the puddles into bright shapes. The ice cube drifted back into that light and shone like glass. Lila leaned closer, her nose almost touching the water.
She pushed it again. It dipped under for a second, then popped right back up.
“Why don’t you stay down?” she murmured.
The faucet dripped once, twice. Each drop made ripples that lifted the cube even higher for a moment.
Lila held her finger just above it, watching. The cube wasn’t stuck. It wasn’t glued. It just… stayed.
“I wonder why ice floats,” she said, very quietly, as if the cube might answer if she didn’t scare it.
