The doll’s eyes were wet.
Not glossy. Not reflective. Wet, like something had just blinked and hadn’t finished drying.
It sat on the narrow shelf beside the sink, angled toward the kitchen instead of the wall. Mara stopped in the doorway and listened. The refrigerator hummed. A tap dripped once. Then again, slower.
She hadn’t put the doll there.
A plastic bag lay crumpled on the counter, the flea market vendor’s handwriting still visible through the thin film. Five dollars. A joke purchase. Something to sit on the shelf and gather dust. She had left it in the bag when she got home. She was sure of that. The apartment was too small for misplacing things.
The eyes looked wrong.
Mara stepped closer. The lashes were rooted individually. Not painted. The skin wasn’t plastic, not exactly. It had a faint give when she pressed a thumb into the cheek. Silicone, maybe.
