The guard says the west wing is closed.
He said it yesterday too. Or last week. The days flatten here, in the same white corridors, under the same filtered light that never quite lands anywhere. He smiles when he says it, like a courtesy, not a restriction.
“It’s under maintenance,” he adds.
There is no sign. No tape. No sound of work. The door at the end of the corridor stands open, a rectangle of shadow that should be brighter, given the skylight above it.
I nod. I always nod.
Routine matters here. Walk the perimeter. Check the humidity gauges. Keep the rooms stable. That’s my job. Preservation. Containment.
I turn away from the west wing and continue down the main hall. The paintings are aligned, frames parallel to the floor. I check them anyway, my fingers hovering just short of the wood. No touch. Never touch.
