The belt stopped for exactly three seconds at two fourteen in the morning.
Not a slow stutter. Not a power dip. It ran smooth, then it didn’t, then it did again. Boxes kept their spacing. The rollers hummed back into place like nothing had been interrupted.
Kai stood with the scanner in his hand, watching the red line glide across barcodes. He didn’t remember the system ever stopping on its own. Not here. Not this late, when the line ran empty and fast.
The overhead lights held steady. No flicker. No shift in pitch from the motors. Just that small absence, like a breath held and released.
He keyed the scanner. A beep. Another box. Same rhythm.
Two months on nights. That was the mistake he kept to himself. He had signed up to avoid people, avoid the supervisor’s questions about why he’d left his last job without notice. Easier to work when everyone else was gone.
The belt ran. The air felt normal. The noise returned to its thin, constant whine.
