About this audiobook
The Second Skin
The breathing started before I opened my eyes.
Not mine. Slower. Wet at the edges. Close enough that it should have touched my cheek.
I lay still and counted my own breaths against it. One, two, three. The other one lagged. Then it matched me. Exactly.
I opened my eyes.
The ceiling of the trailer sat above me, yellowed and cracked in one corner. Nothing else. No shadow on the wall. No shape beside the bed.
The breathing stopped.
Morning light came thin through the blinds. The clock read six twenty. I had not set an alarm.
A smell hung in the air. Old fur. Damp. It didn’t belong in a place like this, not after a night with the windows closed.
I sat up and listened. The trailer was quiet. Pipes. Wind against the metal siding. Nothing else.
I told myself it had been a dream.
I had been sleeping badly since moving out here. The land was cheap. That was the reason. Nothing else.
