About this audiobook
The Water Calls
The bathroom tap was running when I woke.
A thin stream. Not enough to fill the sink. Just a steady thread hitting porcelain. It should have sounded small. It didn’t. It filled the apartment, found the corners, pressed against the bedroom door.
I had turned it off before bed. I remember the metal click under my fingers. I remember checking twice.
The sound kept its rhythm. Not dripping. Not leaking. Intentional.
I stayed in bed longer than I should have. Listening.
The air felt wrong. Cool, though the fan was off. Cool like the space inside a fridge when the door is open too long. It crept across my arms, settled into my throat.
I swung my feet down. The floor was damp.
Not wet. Just damp enough that my heel left a faint print when I stepped.
I followed the sound.
The bathroom light was on. I hadn’t left it on. The door was ajar, just enough to show the edge of the sink. The tap ran in that same thin line.
