The Back Room
The chanting stops when I hold my breath.
Not fades. Not lowers. Stops.
I stand in the narrow corridor behind the old storage rooms, one hand on the painted brick, and listen to nothing. The silence presses against my ears, like a held note that refuses to resolve.
I inhale.
The voices return. Low. Measured. Out of sync with any prayer I know.
I stop breathing again.
Nothing.
The sound cuts clean.
It takes me a second to understand what that means. Another second to decide I should leave.
I don’t.
The corridor smells like damp cloth and something sharper underneath, like metal warmed by hands. The overhead light hums but flickers only once, as if it noticed me. At the end of the corridor, a door sits ajar. A thin line of light spills across the floor, steady and pale.
I should not be here.
I told myself that three times already.
The first was when I saw the notice posted on the side entrance, the one nobody uses.
