The platform speakers were still on, but no voice came through them.
A low hum pressed out instead. Continuous. Wrong. It filled the gaps between the fluorescent lights, as if the station itself was holding a note.
Mara stood alone near the edge. The last scheduled train had passed an hour ago. She had watched it leave. She remembered the doors closing, the carriage lights sliding away. She had stayed anyway. That was the mistake she kept making lately. Staying too long in places that were meant to be left.
The digital board above Track Two flickered. Blank. Then one line appeared, too steady, too bright.
LAST TRAIN.
No time. No destination.
She checked her phone. Eleven forty-seven. No signal bars. The icon had a thin line through it, like it had been crossed out.
A draft moved along the platform, cold enough to lift the fine hairs on her arms. The air down here was usually stale. Tonight it moved.
