The Next Step Never Came offers an examination instead of an acquittal. It shows what has been measured about promotion and about changing jobs, says where the measurements stop, and marks every piece of advice as tested, observed or untested. Alana and the other people in the book are invented. The research figures are not. For people roughly eight to fifteen years into office and knowledge work who want to weigh staying, moving sideways or leaving, and decide on purpose rather than by drift.
