What she doesn't know is that a man in a yellow raincoat closed the sprinkler valve three days before, walked the accelerant in a steady arc between the pallets, held a match for a count of three, and then walked three miles home along the beach and scrubbed the grit out of his boot treads with an old toothbrush. He has already picked the next target.
Lena scrolls past every contact she has and stops on a name she hasn't called in six months. Cole Thatcher, private investigator, still carrying an Oregon licence on his belt.
Cole tells her what she already suspects. She works for an insurance company, and insurance companies want this ruled accidental.

Cole worked arson investigation at the Portland Fire Bureau for six years with a partner named Danny Reyes, who had a wife and a three-year-old boy. The report called it accidental, and Cole was told to write it that way or lose his job.
Lena has been carrying her own parents' fire for eleven years, and her sister Ruby is living with what it left behind.
Then Cole's flashlight finds a single brass button half-buried in the ash.
