A Dangerous Obsession, Unreliable Narrator Biker MC RomanceBy Jax HollowayLength8h 39m
About this audiobook
Rain taps the cracked windshield in uneven bursts, and Cora Dean's knuckles are white on the steering wheel at seven forty-three on a Monday evening, her Dodge Neon ticking like a dying clock.
Her brother has been in lockup since Saturday. Three days of calling around, of leaving messages with a public defender who sounds seventeen, of explaining to a five-year-old that Uncle Tommy is not coming to dinner. Becca stopped asking after the second night and sat at the kitchen table drawing dragons with wings the colour of bruises.
The gauge is on empty. Cora pulls into a two-pump station wedged between a fried chicken joint and a pawn shop, and a rangy mutt comes out of nowhere across the lot.
She swerves, and metal screams against metal.
In the side mirror, a Harley is lying on its side, and the patch pressed into the leather seat is one she can read from where she sits.
Cora's husband was killed by men who wore patches. She watched them come down the county courthouse steps three years ago with their eyes sliding past her like she was already a ghost, and she has not gone near a biker since.
The man who comes out of the convenience store has amber eyes and a jagged scar splitting his left eyebrow. He kneels and goes over the bike the way a man goes over something whose worth he knows exactly. Then he gives her a card.
Zane Corrigan.
The same name is on the recruiting flyer tacked to her brother's bulletin board, under a hand-drawn skull with a mechanical heart.
That night a text arrives from an unknown number. Three words. *See you around, Cora.*
The next morning Zane is at her garage before she has the door all the way up, telling her that somebody has run her plates, and that the somebody is a man called Duke Harlan, who collects debts violently and is asking after a woman with a kid and a green Neon.
What is actually in play is a box her dead husband left behind: shipment logs, spreadsheets, wire transfers routed through a shell company, and a video file with no sound.
*He was dead and this was in a box and nobody knew.*
After that come a brass key with a single tooth, a clubhouse fire, a hostage exchange at a grain silo where the person walking out is not a hostage, a deed to two hundred acres sitting on oil leases, and a decision about that deed that has nothing to do with revenge.
This is a motorcycle club romance with a widow at the middle of it: a mother who runs a garage, a club officer who will not let her stand alone in a gravel lot, a bought-and-paid-for county, and a brother who has to be forgiven out loud before anyone can trust him again. The romance is closed-door.
