About this audiobook

The case file lands on Leah's desk with a thump that sends coffee over the rim of her mug. She catches it before it can reach the photograph pinned to her corkboard: her father, frozen at thirty-eight, smiling like he has just told a joke. Six years since that smile stopped existing. Six years since The Ghost painted the walls of the Black Mesa Mining payroll office with it. Inside the folder is a single page. Coordinates, a timestamp, and a line of cramped handwriting. *He's been using the old Arboles Mine. Moves at dusk. Comes alone.* Leah Hartwell's corkboard holds thirty-two photographs of the same man from thirty-two useless angles. Tall, lean, quick hands, a surveillance frame from the Wells Fargo job where he is scaling a fire escape with one arm held against his side. Her father taught her to read people by their hands, and in that photograph there is a pale line across the knuckles that she has somehow never noticed. Damon Salazar wants the case and tells her the informant is a meth dealer with a grudge and the lead is a landmine, not a breadcrumb. He is not entirely wrong. What she finds inside the mine is not a hideout. It is a base: a cot, a sleeping bag, a propane stove, a generator still warm, and a laptop with no password whose folders are named Payroll Records, Safety Violations, Land Rights Disputes, and Black Mesa Evidence. And at the bottom seam of a duffel bag, her father's badge. The number worn smooth, the pin bent, and old dried blood across it in a bloom that spreads outward from the centre, the way a thing looks when somebody has pressed it hard against a wound. Not the way it would look if it had been taken off a body. The man who has been carrying that badge for six years has grey eyes, a limp, and a scar across his hand. He also has a woman from his past who is on her way to Cedar Ridge with a shotgun crew and a snake inked up her forearm, and Leah's sister lives in this town. A crime romance set in the red rock of New Mexico: a deputy who has built her whole adult life on one certainty, a thief who let her see his face on purpose, a mining company that went bankrupt six months after a murder, and an alliance neither of them can explain to their own side. The romance is closed-door.
