Dust. Three hours of it, and Dahlia Vance still is not used to the way New Mexico smells after dark. Her brother Leo fell asleep somewhere past Tucumcari, head against the window, the oxygen tank upright between his knees and the tubing looped around the headrest like a pale-blue leash.
The hospital has rung three times this week. Once to confirm his place on the transplant list. Twice to ask about insurance she does not have. She told them she had a plan.
The plan is a ranch she has not seen since she was twelve, left to her by a grandfather who has been dead two weeks.
When the house finally appears out of the dark, the porch light is on.
Through the kitchen window she can see a half-eaten sandwich, a glass of milk, a knife smeared with something brown, and a rifle leaning against the wall by the door with a box of shells beside it. The dishes are still warm; she can feel the heat through the glass.
*"You got thirty seconds to get off my land."*
The man behind the door is Rourke Callahan. *"I served with your grandfather's son. Your father."* Dahlia's father died when she was six.
Rourke has been on this place for ten years, and he knows what she does not. The ranch sits on the border. It is a straight shot to Texas that misses every checkpoint on the interstate. The development company ringing her phone from Santa Fe is a front, the sheriff has been helping it along, and Rourke has spent a decade burning stash points and scaring off mules to keep the corridor shut.
Her arrival, he tells her, changes everything.
What Dahlia is left holding is genuinely ugly. She has to sell this land to pay for her brother's lungs. But selling it hands the corridor to the man who wants it. And then a lien surfaces that may mean she cannot sell at all.
What she does have is a phone, a good ear, and the patience to sit in a room and memorise what she hears — the hum of an air conditioner, the click of a lighter, the way a man's accent thickens when he is angry.
There is also a shed, a quantity of planted cocaine, and a line about how nobody believes a disgraced agent.
This is contemporary romantic suspense set on a ranch in New Mexico, about a woman trading everything she has for her brother's life, a man who has been holding one line by himself for ten years, and what a stretch of dirt is worth to the people who want it. The romance is closed-door.
