About this audiobook
Cole Maddox is seventeen, chasing his father's taillight along a ridge road in October on a repainted Sportster, when the Sons of Desolation park a flatbed across the far end of the old iron bridge.
His father's bike goes down. A tall thin man with a gold tooth puts a shotgun against his ribs. And Vance Maddox, VP of the Iron Heretics, looks past the man with the gun, straight at his son, and says *Don't you move, Cole.*
Cole has a .38 in his jacket. He does what he is told.
Eight years later he is the club's VP himself, crouched behind a stack of shipping pallets in a freight yard in November with a two-week-old prospect beside him, waiting on a pickup hauling a trailer under blue tarp, because his president wants proof before he greenlights a strike.
Then a sedan tears through the fence wire at speed and hits a stack of tires. Steam off the hood. The driver's door flies open and a woman stumbles out clutching a phone, scanning every shadow as if she expects someone to be in it.
She runs. He catches her in ten strides, and she fights like someone trained her, and then her teeth find the meat of his hand and break the skin.
Her name is Rowan Hayes. The photographs on that phone show Detective Morrison shaking hands with Snake Ashford in a diner parking lot, timestamped for hours when Morrison should have been filing reports. Morrison is not only crooked. He is her ex-boyfriend, he taught her to shoot, he tracked her to a motel outside Cross Creek four days ago, and he told her over coffee that if she did not hand over the phone her sister Lena would have an accident.
So Cole takes the phone and takes her back to the clubhouse, where the question in front of the table is whether a crooked detective on the Sons' payroll is leverage or a setup with a woman's story attached. Twelve unread messages from Lena sit in Cole's jacket pocket, unanswered.
A closed-door motorcycle club romance about an order given on a bridge by a dying man, an ex-boyfriend with a badge, and a captive who is more dangerous to everyone in that clubhouse than the men hunting her.
