The auditorium door slams behind a woman from the parent association and the echo bounces off linoleum turned glossy under fluorescent light. Declan O'Shea sits in the second row with his thigh against the hard plastic armrest, fingers drumming a silent count on his knee. Fourteen seconds until his name is called. Thirteen. Twelve.
The ceiling fan clicks overhead, off balance. Somebody in the back coughs into the silence.

He is standing before the sentence finishes. His dress shoes pinch, worn to exactly two funerals and one wedding and never broken in. The leather creaks as he walks to the podium. He grips its edges, feels the grain of cheap wood under calloused palms, catches a splinter in his thumb and presses harder, because the small pain is useful.
Rhys is in that room too, and the reason Declan's count went wrong at fourteen has nothing to do with the agenda.
What follows: a boy in a hallway who should not have been alone, nettles and negotiations, the weight of a name in a town this size, a game face that stops working, salmon chowder eaten in company, closet doors, and jealousy that neither of them has the vocabulary for yet.

Declan let him go. Told him to go, in fact. Kissed him on the forehead and said *I'll handle it*, and meant it, and was wrong about roughly half of what handling it would require.
He is going to get those helmets. By the time he does, the helmets are not remotely the point, and every person in that auditorium knows exactly who he is.
