Then the rink door opens and Principal Linda Gunderson walks in with her grey bob and her reading glasses on a chain and a man Alex has never seen, lean, maybe thirty, with a compass rose inked under his left sleeve.
*"This is Jamie Reyes. He's your new assistant coach."*
Alex did not authorise an assistant coach. The school board did, months ago, at a meeting he skipped because he assumed it was about budget cuts.
His sister Diane runs the diner and hears every piece of gossip in town before it reaches the street, and she does not warn him without reason. Her text arrives unfinished: *Be careful. He's got a rep—*
Jamie has left a job before. The parents did not want a gay coach teaching their sons to hit, the board did not want the publicity, and the principal told him he could stay if he kept his personal life personal.
Alex has been keeping his personal life personal for nine years in a town this size, and Finn O'Shea, the red-headed kid whose hands never stop moving, watches him more closely than anyone else on that ice.
Then the phone rings with a blocked number and a voice that says he knows things, things about Alex and his new assistant, things the school board might find interesting, and would he like to have a conversation in person at the Rusty Nail tomorrow night.
What it costs to stop hiding does not land only on Alex. A boy gets pulled off the roster by a father who has been gone twelve years, and Alex drives out to a mill parking lot after the man's shift to say so to his face.
A hockey romance between two men in a small northern town: a coach who has built a whole career around a locked door, an assistant who has already paid for telling the truth once, a sister who will not let him deflect, and a team that turns out to be paying attention. The romance is closed-door.
