Twenty minutes before his first pep rally, Leo is called into a board meeting to defend a field lighting proposal. The booster club has raised twelve thousand and he needs the board to approve the rest before October.
Then the fine arts department head walks in late, smelling of turpentine, with a manila folder split along the crease. Samira Chen did not know the meeting was happening, because the district still emails her old address. She is here about the forty percent cut to the arts budget that nobody put on the agenda.

Leo argues that football pays for itself. Samira asks him whether he knows his own niece is in her beginning drawing class, and whether he knows how good she is.
Brenda Harlow, who runs the board, watches all of it and makes them an offer. The two most vocal department heads in the district will co-chair the Harvest Hoedown together. If the festival works, both proposals get full funding. If it doesn't, everything goes back on the table in October with cuts attached.
Six weeks. A chili booth. A woman with paint on her hands who tells him not to be late.
Then, under the bleachers of his father's own field, Samira finds a mural nobody was ever meant to see, and a signature in the bottom right corner, small and neat and almost apologetic: M. Marchetti.
What Leo does with that is the rest of the book, and it costs him more than a vote.
