Gabe Torres pulls the equipment shed door open into the morning fog with a black duffel over one shoulder and the smell of wet cedar and rusted metal filling his lungs. The field stretches out in front of him like something abandoned: uncut grass to the shins, bleachers streaked with moss, goalposts three seasons past their last coat of paint.
He did not expect a parade. You do not leave a town like this for fifteen years and come back to applause. He unpins the sheet, folds it, tucks it under his arm, and decides to hang it in his office.
His son was three when he left. Liam is taller than him now, has his mother's green eyes and her habit of looking at the ground when he does not want to talk, and he jogs past on the first morning without meeting his father's eyes. There is a scholarship offer sitting in a drawer at the house and a conversation neither of them intends to start.
A red pickup pulls in with the tailgate held together by baling wire. Nate Aldridge steps out before the engine dies, taller and leaner than Gabe remembers, forearms the colour of worn leather, a scar across his face that is new.
Nate's father coached this team. There is a 2009 newspaper in a box marked KITCHEN/FRAGILE with the man's photograph on the front page, arms around two players, open and proud in a way Gabe has never once managed.
What follows: a man who will not back down, an alliance neither of them wanted, the weight of a shadow cast by somebody who is dead, an idea that changes the programme, a game that changes lives, a trust fall, and a dinner nobody finishes.
He has the job. He has the team. He has his son on the field running the offence the way he should have been allowed to from the start. Now he has to convince the one person who has every reason not to believe a word he says.
