About this audiobook
A pawn ticket dated eleven years ago, a name in the handwriting she has been reading on club paperwork since 2016, and a patch on the wrong cut in the room where she used to sit.
I price people. It is most of what I am after thirteen years holding a bondsman's license in three counties: so much a mile, ten percent on the face of a bond, a skip rate I can quote for any given year. I am also the woman who came back to Cold Falls for one winter to sign papers about her mother's house, which is pledged twice and standing between an underwriter and sixty-two thousand dollars.
The envelope had no return address, and it had been sitting in a folder of mine since 2017. Inside it was a pawn ticket written eleven years ago, and clipped behind it, a redemption receipt from nine years ago, paid in cash, signed by the woman who now wears my patch to the table at the Redbird. I have spent nine years telling one account of the day I found that ticket, and it has always had me paying it off, standing at that window with my own money in my hand. What the second line says is that I was late, that somebody got there first, and that I have been the only person in this valley telling that story.
I left in August with two duffel bags and no explanation and no goodbye, and I did not come back for nine years. What the years cost is a license I built from nothing, a mother whose recovery is mine to carry now, and a house with a mortgage nobody in this town will look at.
He does not want forgiveness. He wants something harder and more expensive: my signature on a paper that puts his name on the recovery rotation and the rival club off three counties, and every route to that page runs through an office that still belongs to the woman who took my place. To get it he has to hand over the only thing he has ever measured himself with, which is his name on a document somebody else keeps.
The book is about the distance between what a person sees through a window and what happened on the other side of it. About what a woman can build out of one torn slip of paper, and what it costs a man to sign his whole name over to somebody else's records and let her decide what to do with it.
