About this audiobook
Some names get written on a form, and some get left blank for eight years.
The house on Lee Street is mine now, along with the practice I run out of the front room, the truck that starts on the third try, and a seven-year-old who has never once been told the truth about her father. I am a physical therapist. I read a room the way other people read a face: exits, hazards, the number of people who would have to be carried. My daughter's whole legal life fits on four lines of typing, and one of those lines is empty.
I found a hospital identification band while I was moving my mother's dresser out of the back bedroom. White plastic, my own name on it, and the date of the fourteenth of May. I know exactly whose pocket it came out of, because I watched him put it there.
That was the week his mother died and mine did too, and I was six weeks along and said nothing, because he was standing in a hospital corridor with his whole life going down around him. The letter went certified mail in May. It came back with one word stamped across the front. In June I drove out Quarry Road to his club's gate, and a woman with a coffee in her hand told me the things that stopped me, and I have carried those sentences the way I carry the band, in a jacket pocket, for eight years.
The man from that gate hauls the county's rock out of the pit he works, and I have spent eight winters arranging my route through town so that I never once have to pass it. Then a county bridge project put his survey line across my street, and his name on my paperwork, and his hands in front of my daughter.
He does not want forgiveness. He wants his name on a form that a school and a hospital and a county will accept, and the price of that signature is the pit, the club that raised him, the chair he was offered, and six acres his mother left him.
The girl has said her father's name out loud in my kitchen, and I am the one who taught her to say it and the one who told her he was gone. Some names are kept off paper to protect a child. Some are kept off paper to protect the woman who left them off, and eight years is long enough to stop pretending I can tell those two apart.
