About this audiobook
A child's drawing comes out of a saddlebag with eleven words in crayon at the bottom of it, and eleven words is all it takes to end eight years of a story.
I interpret for a living, which means I spend my days putting what one person says into a shape another person can carry, and I am careful with it the way my great-aunt Dell taught me to be careful with a scale. She raised me. She kept every ticket and weighed every sack of feed on Cottonwood Row, and she died in September, and she left me the house and a date for the estate sale and nothing else I can use.
My daughter is seven. She has been told since before she could ask that her father died in a wreck out on the highway before she was born, and I have told it so many times that it comes out level. In the saddlebag off the porch I found her drawing: a rider on a blue motorcycle with his hand out to a small figure on the pillion, and under it, in her blocky leaning letters, when I am big I am going to be like my dad. She has never met him. She has never seen his face except in the one photograph I was too tired to take out of the album.
Eight years is four towns, six addresses, and one certified letter that came back to me with somebody else's signature on the green card and a note telling me not to write again. I am not going to stand here and say I kept trying. I stopped. I called it protecting her, and I had a phone number that worked the entire time.
He is thirty-six now and he measures everything, because a man who measures is a man nobody can argue with: skid marks, engine hours, pounds on a platform. Nobody in Slate Basin ever told him he had a daughter. To get his name on one line of one form he will have to give up his share of the road contract, his seat at the club's table, and the blue bike he has been rebuilding since his father died, and he will do it in an office, in front of a clerk, with a photocopy of a crayon drawing paper-clipped to the back.
A legacy is not the thing you leave behind. It is the thing you sign for, and then carry, and then weigh again every year for the rest of your life.
