About this audiobook
A letter that was never delivered, and a man who has spent fifteen years being hated for the wrong crime.
I measure land for a living. Boundaries, easements, the distance between one person's property and the next, which is the only kind of distance I have ever been any good at. I left Gorse Ridge, Arkansas at nineteen with a surveyor's chain in the truck bed and a family name I did not intend to use again. Now I am hired back for one contract: the old Saltbush allotments, the fairgrounds drainage, and a twenty-two acre piece of Delta bottomland that was my mother's.
In a rusted coffee can on a shelf in the tow yard I found a burned letter. What is left of it is a corner of law-office letterhead, an April 2011 postmark, and my mother's name in a line of type. There is also a photograph of it, taken before somebody put a match to it, and the date on that photograph is a date I remember, because my mother died four days later.
The county has the acreage on its delinquent list and the auction falls on the Saturday of the fair, because the 2011 sale was never recorded and the file carries a signature that is not hers. I have measured the cost fifteen ways and every one of them is a number of years: years spent being good at a job four hundred miles from here, years driving past this exit, the year I came home for a funeral and left the same night.
The man who owns the tow yard stands forty feet from my tripod every morning and has never once argued with me about what he did. He wants the ground back in my name, in writing, and he will pay for it with two trucks, a shop and his seat at the club's table, which leaves him a rented bay, an engine hour meter and a father's name nobody will say out loud.
Some things a person does in anger get settled with an apology. Others have to be dug up, dated, notarized and handed to the person they were owed to, because the only thing that outlives what we did is the paperwork. This is a book about the difference.
