About this audiobook
Three days of drums on the river flats, one spent casing in a toolbox tray, and seven years of a story a woman has told a six-year-old about a father who went down the river.
I am the county's night dispatcher. I answer the radio for twenty-two miles of river towns, one powwow and everybody's worst Tuesday. I work nights because nights ask fewer questions. I own a scanner, a county car, and a house on the flats that the county is buying out from under me before school starts. My son begins first grade on the first of September. The father's line on his school card is blank, the second line carries a name that is not his father's, and I am the one who left it that way.
In August I lift the tray out of a machinist's chest in my garage, the chest that has sat under the workbench since before my son was born, and there is one brass casing in the felt with the rim burred where a man I loved put a round through it seven years ago. I know what it is. I put it in my jacket pocket, and forty minutes later the man himself comes up my drive for the first time in seven years.
Seven Augusts ago I sat at the console while three calls came in off the powwow grounds, and at seven the next morning I watched him put another woman into the cab of his truck and drive her past me. Four weeks later I stood in a courthouse hallway with the truth folded in my jacket and seven weeks of a pregnancy under it, while a man told me that staying away from him was how I kept my certification. I did not try again for six years. That is the part I will have to say out loud, in front of people.
He wants his name in the father's line on a piece of paper a school, a hospital and a county will accept. Getting it costs him a written statement that puts him in front of a district attorney, the only piece of evidence that ever kept him out of it, the boat he promised to take me downriver in, and an hour on his feet in front of his father's table with his father's photograph on the wall behind him.
This is a book about the distance between four miles and seven years, about what a man did and what the paperwork says he did, and about who is allowed to sign for a child's life.
