Elias Vane is a surveyor. He measures things. He does not believe in ghosts.
But when he returns to the fog-drowned hollow his mother fled in 1979, he finds a handwritten ledger sealed inside a chimney wall. It lists two hundred years of debts owed to his family — and every debt was paid in blood, in years, in children. The last entry is not closed. The ink is still wet.
Now the ledger has his name in it.
To close the account, Elias must walk the old line his ancestors ran — past nine stone cairns, past the thing that walks between them, to a chimney standing alone at the head of the hollow. There, he will decide who pays.
Some debts are inherited. Some lines are never meant to be run true.
