Summary

Emma Clarke pressed her forehead against the truck window, watching the Montana forest blur by in endless shades of green. Her uncle’s ancient Ford rattled with every bump in the road, and she swore it might actually fall apart before they reached his cabin. The air smelled like pine needles and gasoline, and she had no cell service, which in her mind meant she had officially been exiled from civilization. Her uncle, Dr. Samuel Clarke, looked perfectly content behind the wheel. He hummed off-key to some old country song, as if driving into the middle of nowhere was the highlight of his week. Emma, on the other hand, was convinced this was her punishment for existing.
