About this audiobook
Zofia Kalinowska agrees to cover a night shift at the Lumen Hotel after one of the receptionists stops showing up for work. Marta Żak has not answered her phone for days, her family has reported her missing, and management wants everyone to treat the situation as a private matter.
Then Zofia discovers that someone has prepared a new employee badge for her.
It carries Marta's surname.
ZOFIA ŻAK.
At first, every strange detail seems to have a reasonable explanation. A printing mistake. A corrupted employee profile. An outdated schedule. A malfunctioning phone line. But a hotel guest addresses Zofia by the wrong surname before she can explain it, the booking system shows shifts she never worked, and a call comes from a room that should be empty.
Soon the pattern becomes impossible to dismiss.
A second disappearance is tied to the Lumen. Two years earlier, a young woman vanished from the same hotel after seventeen minutes disappeared from the CCTV record. The receptionist working that night also slipped out of the hotel's official history. Now the same number of minutes is missing again.
Zofia starts following what the system says - and what it refuses to show. Electronic logs contradict printed schedules. Access cards open doors they should not open. Room numbers lead to spaces that do not exist on current plans. Old service corridors survive behind renovated walls, and traces left by previous employees suggest that the hotel has been keeping more than one version of its own past.
The deeper Zofia goes, the more personal the mystery becomes.
Her presence at the Lumen may not have been accidental. Someone noticed her family before she was hired. Someone attached the surname Żak to her account long before the night Marta vanished. Someone has been waiting to see what would happen when that name appeared behind the reception desk again.
But the people around Zofia are not divided neatly into allies and enemies. Each of them is protecting something: a secret, a promise, a career, a missing person, a family history, or a version of the truth they believe must never be exposed. And every attempt to protect someone else comes with a cost.
The Shift After She Disappeared is a psychological thriller about identity, memory, hidden records, family secrets and the dangerous temptation to decide what other people are allowed to know. In a hotel where names can be rewritten, footage can vanish and locked rooms may have more than one history, Zofia must learn to separate evidence from manipulation before someone else decides who she is - and what version of the past will survive.
