Ezra Carmichael works the same night shift at the Philadelphia Helpline. Three years in against Rowan's six months, leather jacket patched at the elbow with a faded Ramones logo, a voice that belongs to three AM and too many cigarettes, and he has never once used Rowan's first name.
His position is the whole argument between them in one sentence: you get them for as long as you get them, and then you hang up and take the next call.
Rowan does not want to take the next call. Rowan wants the night shift supervisor job, and better follow-up, and real training for the callers who are not in crisis but are not all right either, and some system that does not simply let people go into the void the moment they hang up.
Marisol Reyes, the current supervisor, puts it plainly: both of them are up for the same promotion, and both of them are making her job difficult. She schedules them anyway, two stations apart, close enough to hear each other through the room.
What Rowan does not admit for a long time is that he had been tracking Ezra for weeks before Marisol ever paired them.
What Ezra does not say is that his sister Clara is sixteen, in a hospital bed, and that the bills are not hypothetical.
At the same time, somebody has been inside a locked drawer, a terminal and an email account, and an audit lands on the table containing details that no audit should contain. Marisol's hands have started to shake, and she is not telling anyone why.
The thing that finally breaks between Rowan and Ezra is not the promotion. It is a voice memo, recorded for one person's ears only, that Rowan uses as evidence without asking.
This is a contemporary MM romance set on a crisis helpline, about two people who genuinely disagree about what the job is, a promotion neither can win cleanly, and the difference between saving someone and needing to. The romance is closed-door.
