An Inside Job, Double Life Contemporary RomanceBy Nora KeatingLength8h 46m
About this audiobook
The Allbright Foundry sign has hung crooked for twenty-three years, ever since Tessa's father backed a forklift into the post and told everyone they would fix it Monday.
Tessa has not worked a shift here since high school. She drives back anyway, because Uncle Ross sounded wrong on the phone, thin, like he was holding something back with both hands.
The casting bay runs at a constant ninety degrees, winter or summer. Ross tells her the pipeline order is six hundred units, the yard holds three hundred good ones, and if they do not ship by the fifteenth the contract is void. He also tells her the state has sent someone new.
*Name's Cross.*
*Why didn't you tell me?*
*Because you left.*
Cross has already written three citations. He has also pulled a purchase order out from behind the break-room microwave, where somebody had stuffed it, with a supplier number of six digits of zeros and Garrett Voss's blocky signature at the bottom. Garrett runs the floor now that Ross's hands have gone. The company on the order does not exist.
Then Tessa's phone plays a voicemail from her mother.
*You shouldn't have come back. Some things are better left melted.*
What the foundry has been doing is simple and enormous. Cheap scrap coming in, premium-grade invoices going out, stamped certifications, substandard metal shipped to construction sites and bridge repairs and a hospital wing in Scranton where the specs called for Grade 50 and what arrived was barely Grade 30.
What it has cost is a man who walked out after a shift and was never found, a union rep who changed his story three days before a grand jury and died in a car two weeks later, and a stack of night logs in which Garrett Voss is signed in somewhere else every single time the hoist fails or a panel shorts.
And the inspector is not what the letter from Harrisburg says he is.
*Went to check on your brother. Trust no one else.*
Before this is over there is a fire at the mill, a dog tag in the furnace charge, a lawyer in a suit that costs more than her car, a match dropped into a wastebasket, and Tessa at a podium in the union hall telling the members exactly what her family did.
*I'm not my uncle, and I'm not my father.*
This is a small-town industrial romance built out of counterfeit steel and family rot: a mill running on fumes, two people who each show up under false pretenses, and a woman who decides to keep the place open on a profit-sharing plan rather than sell it for scrap. The romance is closed-door.
