Then a man in a navy suit sets a folded envelope on the counter during the rush. *Declan Ashford.* The offer is good for thirty days, he says, and he leaves it beside the register. A bag of flour goes over his shoulders and down his collar on his way out.
Cora never opens it. Leo collapses, and she runs out with his coat and leaves the envelope exactly where it sits.
Declan turns up in the hospital room with his tie loosened and his sleeves rolled and puts a different sheet of paper on the tray table beside her brother's bed. A medical trust: full transplant evaluation, waitlist registration, surgical costs, and a loan to the bakery on top.

The deed carries a right-of-first-refusal clause going back to 1998, which means Ashford Development can match any offer from any investor she ever manages to find. Declan needs to show his board that the bakery is an asset rather than a liability. His lawyer is careful to state that nothing in the contract requires intimacy.
