There was a night, years back, when he could have walked. He did not, and everything since has been a payment on that one decision.
Rain. Not the clean kind that sluices off slate rooftops uptown, but the greasy salt-scoured kind that smells of diesel and dead fish and somebody else's bad decisions. It beads on the windshield of Dante's truck like sweat on a fever patient, and the wipers smear it into a film that turns the warehouse district into a watercolour of rust and shadow.
He kills the engine. The rain hammers the cab roof, a sound he has learned to ignore the way other men ignore their own heartbeats.
The warehouse looms ahead, a black tooth against a bruised sky, corrugated sides weeping rust-stained tears. A security light buzzes over the roll-up door and throws a puddle of jaundiced light across cracked concrete. Marco's sedan is already there, parked cockeyed like a dog marking territory.
He checks his phone. No word from Elena tonight, which is good. No word means a double shift at the hospital, which means money earned rather than money borrowed.
Julian is inside that building writing something he should not be writing, and neither of them has worked out yet how expensive that is going to get.
What follows: a debt he chose, a story being written in real time, a face he cannot forget, the man who hit first, a sister worth protecting, a paper trail, a lie told to somebody who deserved better, and an alliance neither of them wanted.
*You kept me in the dark for months. You lied to my face about where the money was coming from.*
*That's a stupid plan.*
*It's the only one we've got.*
Soft, careful, mindful of cracked ribs and bruises.
Dante will hand over the name, the ledger and himself. He will stand in a room full of men who own him and say it out loud. And the next person who puts a hand on Julian for any reason at all is going to leave that room in a considerably worse condition than they entered it.
