And a man she did not know met her eyes for exactly one second and then dismissed her, standing the way someone stands when they have been trained to clear a room and walk out of it clean.
He is not who he says he is. He has a handler. He has an accent that holds up, a cover that holds up, and a set of instructions that do not include the daughter.
What follows is a locked room that will not stay locked, an offer that smells of gasoline, a dinner that tastes of ashes, a bullet meant for somebody else, and a kidnapping nobody warns her about. There is a dance she cannot refuse and a balcony where the music drops to a hum.
