The Book of Enoch is a work by R. H. Charles, first published in 1917. This work presents a critical edition of the ancient Hebrew text known as 1 Enoch, a pseudepigraphical work attributed to Enoch, Noah’s great-grandfather. Although not included in the canonical Hebrew Bible, the Book of Enoch held great importance in early Jewish and Christian traditions.
Its pages whisper secrets guarded for millennia: gateways between heaven and earth, hierarchies of luminous angels and rebellious shadows, and a judgment that silently looms over humanity. It is the forbidden chronicle of the Guardians—fallen angels who, seduced by mortal flesh, broke the heavenly covenant and poured forbidden knowledge onto the earth, spawning a race of giants and a chaos that heaven itself had to contain. In these lines, one senses the echo of a primordial world, suspended between wonder and terror, where every vision is an omen and every angel holds an unsolved mystery.
R. H. Charles’s work was not a mere translation, but an act of philological resurrection: with almost obsessive rigor, he rescued from oblivion a text that for centuries had survived only on the margins of the canon, passed down in secret by communities that sensed its dark and sacred weight. Charles restored a voice to a work capable of speaking of cosmic justice, of divine wrath barely held in check, and of a messianic hope that burned like embers beneath the ashes of history. It is no surprise that its imagery has traversed the centuries to find its way into the writings of Tertullian and Irenaeus, fueling the apocalyptic imagination of early Christianity.
Lost and then rediscovered—as if by a design that history itself seemed intent on fulfilling—the text resurfaced from ancient Ethiopian manuscripts, silent guardians of a wisdom the West believed had vanished forever. Even today, the Book of Enoch remains a fascinating enigma: a door left ajar onto the Old Testament and apocalyptic thought, a text that never ceases to challenge anyone who dares to peer into its depths.
