Verso il 245 un uomo apre a Roma una scuola in cui non si tengono lezioni: si legge e si discute finché qualcuno non capisce. Rifiuta di farsi ritrarre — portarsi dietro l'immagine di un'immagine gli sembra troppo. Novecentosessantacinque anni dopo, a Parigi, un concilio proibisce i libri di Aristotele sulla natura e fa bruciare i quaderni di un maestro: qualcuno, leggendoli, era arrivato a dire che Dio e il mondo sono la stessa cosa.
Fra quel rifiuto e quel rogo sta il secondo volume di La crepa. Non un catalogo di filosofi: la storia di una sola domanda, che cambia lingua tre volte e ogni volta cambia padrone. In greco è la domanda di chi eredita Platone e si ritrova dentro una fede. In latino, quella di chi ha perso i libri. In arabo e in ebraico, quella di chi li ha tutti. Poi torna in latino: che cosa può fare la ragione da sola?
Ogni risposta risolve un problema e ne apre un altro, e sotto tutte corre la seconda grande crepa: quella fra ciò che si crede e ciò che si dimostra.
