Nell'aprile del 1336 due fratelli salgono su un monte della Provenza senza nessuna ragione pratica. In cima uno dei due apre a caso un libretto e legge che gli uomini vanno ad ammirare le vette dei monti e trascurano sé stessi, e non parla per tutta la discesa. Cinquecentocinquant'anni dopo, un ex professore di filologia crolla in una strada di Torino e non scrive più niente di comprensibile.
Il quarto volume di La crepa non è un catalogo di filosofi. È la storia di due domande che corrono parallele per cinque secoli e che a un certo punto si scoprono lo stesso problema. Prima si rompe il mondo — Machiavelli, Lutero, Montaigne, Galileo; poi il peso si sposta su chi guarda — Cartesio, Spinoza, Hume; poi Kant mette la ragione in tribunale; infine il sistema e le tre demolizioni che lo smontano.
Sotto tutto corre la terza delle grandi crepe: l'età moderna colloca in chi conosce le condizioni della conoscenza, e da quel momento nessuno riesce più a uscire da sé per verificare.
