Rifiuta di farsi ritrarre — portarsi dietro l'immagine di un'immagine, dice, gli sembra troppo. Novecentosessantacinque anni dopo, a Parigi, un concilio proibisce i libri di Aristotele sulla natura e fa bruciare i quaderni di un maestro.
Il secondo volume di La crepa non è un catalogo di filosofi. È la storia di una sola domanda, che cambia lingua tre volte e ogni volta cambia padrone: in greco è di chi eredita Platone e si ritrova dentro una fede, in latino di chi ha perso i libri, in arabo e in ebraico di chi li ha tutti. Da Plotino a Toledo, passando per Agostino, Boezio, Anselmo, Avicenna, Averroè e Maimonide.
Sotto tutto corre la seconda delle grandi crepe: quella fra ciò che si crede e ciò che si dimostra. Mille anni in cui la filosofia lavora dentro una fede — e la mette in difficoltà.
