The verb before the politics: striving as pressure (29:8), as the Quran's own speaking (25:52), as the life's total exertion (22:78), and as the defense with wealth and lives (61:11). The cause: fi sabilillah — the rescue of the crushed (4:75), the protection of every worship-house (22:40), the ending of persecution with the war's own termination clause (2:193). The forms: the inner struggle (29:69), the giving and the speaking, the permission of 22:39 and the command charter of 2:190-193 — 'do not transgress... if they cease.' The rule-book in full: treaties kept (9:4), the safety-seeker protected and escorted (9:6), the captive's rights (47:4, 8:70), peace-inclination answered (8:61), retaliation capped and the pardon priced better (16:126), no compulsion (2:256, 10:99).
