The Quran describes intercession — *Shafa'ah* — as the advocacy on the Day of Judgment that saves those who would otherwise be lost, that elevates those who would otherwise be limited, and that bridges those who would otherwise fall short. The Quran says: "Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?" (2:255). Intercession is the mercy — the mercy that is the second chance, the mercy that is the advocacy, and the mercy that is the intervention. It is the act of one who speaks on behalf of another, the act of one who pleads for another, and the act of one who advocates for another before the Lord.
