Surah Al-Kawthar is the shortest surah of the Quran — three verses, ten words in the Arabic, a passage a child can memorize in a minute and a believer can study for a lifetime. The surah was revealed, according to the transmitted occasions, in answer to an insult: one of the leading opponents of the Prophet in Makkah reportedly mocked him as abtar — cut off, a man whose line would end, whose name would die with him. And the answer of heaven was the surah: "Indeed, We have granted you al-Kawthar. So pray to your Lord and sacrifice. Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off" (108:1-3).
