From Kekionga, where the St. Joseph and the St. Marys join to make the Maumee, a canoe could reach Lake Erie, Detroit and Albany, or the Wabash, the Mississippi and New Orleans. The Myaamia, the Miami, had built their principal town at that hinge on purpose. In the middle of the eighteenth century it was one of the busiest places between the Great Lakes and the Ohio, a town of bark lodges and cornfields worked with mussel-shell hoes, where the women kept the calendar from the maple-sugar camps to the fall hunt.
After the Revolution the United States claimed that country by treaty with Britain and began selling it. In 1790 General Josiah Harmar marched on Kekionga and was beaten back. In November 1791 Arthur St. Clair led a larger army north, and at dawn on the upper Wabash a confederacy of Miami, Shawnee, Delaware and their allies, under Mihšihkinaahkwa, Little Turtle, and the Shawnee Blue Jacket, destroyed it. More than six hundred soldiers died in a few hours, the worst defeat Native nations ever inflicted on the United States Army.
Washington's answer was a new army, Anthony Wayne's Legion, trained for two years before it fought. The confederacy met it in August 1794 among storm-felled trees near the Maumee rapids. Beaten there, the warriors fell back on a British fort, and the British shut the gates on them. The Treaty of Greenville took most of Ohio the next year, and the last chapter walks the ground again to test what its lines really settled.
