A Comanche camp of two hundred people on the upper Brazos in 1840 could strike its lodges, load its travois and have more than a thousand horses on the trail in under two hours, and it moved its herd to fresh grass three or four times a week. That mobility, and a working knowledge of every spring and water hole across a country the size of France, kept the Comanche prosperous on the southern plains for a century and a half. The grass fed the horses, the horses carried the hunt, and the buffalo came by the million.
By the spring of 1874 hide hunters were stripping the southern herd, and in June a young war leader named Quanah, son of a Comanche chief and a Texas girl taken captive as a child, rode with Comanche, Kiowa and Cheyenne warriors against the hunters' post at Adobe Walls. The attack failed. By summer the southern plains nations were at war, and the Army was sending columns in from every side.
At dawn on September 28, Ranald Mackenzie's cavalry rode down into Palo Duro Canyon, burned the lodges and winter stores, and later shot more than a thousand captured horses. Hunger did the rest. In June 1875 Quanah brought in his Quahada band, the one that had held out longest, to Fort Sill. On the reservation he became a rancher, a judge on the Indian court and a hard bargainer in Washington, and by the 1880s the war leader of Adobe Walls was negotiating the lease of Comanche grass to Texas cattlemen.
